The Canterbury Branch offers its Members a varied programme of activities each year which usually includes talks, meals out, a summer party, a pre-Christmas lunch and outings to locations of interest. The aim is to allow members to mix and get to know their fellow members better, whilst promoting matters of interest relating to the County of Kent.

In April 2019 the Canterbury Branch held its AGM. At the conclusion of official business, once the committee was voted in for a further year, there was the annual presentation of £250 charity cheques. This year there were four benefiting charities:

  • The Lord Mayor of Canterbury’s Christmas Gift Fund,
  • The Lady Mayoress’ Charity (supporting Strode Park and SNAAP - Special Needs Action and Activities Project),
  • Canterbury and District Recorder (talking newspaper for the visually impaired), and
  • The Canterbury Umbrella Centre.

To end the afternoon, there was a performance by Lizzie Willis, a local actress, who enthralled us with excerpts from some of Christopher Marlowe‘s works.

With the removal of government restrictions imposed in response to concerns about the coronavirus, it is to be hoped that there can be a resumption of Association and Branch activities. However, it is recognised that it is necessary for people to remain cautious and, consequently, it may be prudent to limit or cancel any scheduled event, possibly on short notice. All plans should, therefore, be considered as tentative and Members should check before travelling to any activity or event.
